Burn Care Education at Your Pace

The Advanced Burn Life Support® (ABLS) program is the American Burn Association’s trusted course for emergency burn care training.

Focused on the first 24 hours post-injury, ABLS prepares clinicians to confidently assess, stabilize, and coordinate care for burn patients — whether in the field, the emergency department, or before transfer.

Certification and Credit

Participants who complete the course receive an ABLS certificate of completion, valid for four years. Physicians and nurses may also earn continuing education credit.

Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS) is a critical asset for flight and critical care paramedics operating in remote and austere environments. In disaster scenarios—where resources are limited and evacuation is delayed—ABLS provides the framework for rapid burn assessment, fluid resuscitation, and stabilization. This training ensures providers can deliver high-level burn care at the point of injury, bridging the gap between field response and definitive treatment, and significantly improving patient outcomes in remote medicine and mass casualty incidents.

ABLS International Program  

Expand access to ABLS Live training worldwide. 

The ABLS International Program helps organizations around the world establish fully certified, independently operated ABLS Live training sites. Build local faculty, expand access to ABLS Live certification, and deliver standardized burn care training where it is needed. 


Get Started

Program Requirements 

Organizations establishing an international ABLS Live site must: 

  • Support initial training. Send participants to the United States for ABLS Live training or cover transportation and lodging for ABLS instructors and one to two ABA staff members to teach on-site. This continues until the site has certified local faculty. 

  • Meet ABLS requirements. Follow all ABLS Live policies, including the requirement that participants hold ABLS Live certification for one year before becoming eligible to instruct. 

  • Develop local faculty. Train the initial instructor group and, eventually, National Faculty through a course in the United States or by hosting ABA faculty and staff locally. The ABA Annual Meeting may provide an efficient opportunity to complete required courses and observations. 

  • Operate independently. Once qualified local instructors and National Faculty are established, the site can conduct ABLS Live courses without bringing in ABA faculty to teach each course. 

  • Maintain program standards. Continue to meet ABA faculty, program, recertification, and copyright requirements. Official ABLS course materials may be translated to the local language by the host organization, and a translator may be present during instruction. 

  • Participate in site visits. The ABA will conduct a site visit every three years to review compliance with ABA and ABLS standards. The site is responsible for associated costs. 

Get Started 

  1. Complete the eligibility questionnaire  to determine program eligibility. 

  2. Connect with ABA staff for next steps after your questionnaire is reviewed. 

  3. Coordinate an ABLS Live course if approved, either on-site or in the United States. 

  4. Maintain ABLS requirements throughout the life of the program.
