Follow the footsteps of burn survivors – an incredible, interactive experience awaits!

Step into the must-see exhibit of the 2024 ABA Annual Meeting: A Mile in My Shoes: Compassion for Burn Survivors & Care Givers. This exhibit is presented jointly by the American Burn Association, the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors, and Empathy Museum to share stories, increase understanding, and encourage compassion for burn survivors and caregivers.

Visitors are invited to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes – literally. Housed in a cross between a shoebox and a shoe store, this exhibit holds a diverse collection of audio stories that explore our shared humanity, paired with the storyteller’s shoes.

Compassion is a common value of the ABA and Phoenix Society; we seek to grow understanding and create nonjudgmental safe spaces to learn and relieve the distress of others where possible. This is reflected in the theme of ABA’s 2024 Annual Meeting: Caring for Patients, Caring for Each Other. As partners, the organizations have explored ways to demonstrate, incorporate, celebrate, and expand our value of compassion within the burn community and ways to share the story of the burn community. A key to this is helping medical providers better understand the perspectives of the patients and families they serve and also understanding the perspectives of those who care for them across disciplines.

We hope you will join us for this remarkable exploration of the burn care community!
