Science of Wound Preparation
Monday, May 15 at 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM
The Science of Wound Preparation and Science of Wound Closure courses are hands-on labs that teach the basic and advanced skills necessary for acute burn care. The two courses replace and expand upon principles previously taught in the Advanced Burn Provider Course and incorporate traditional methods of excision and grafting with new technologies in development. It is strongly recommended that participants complete the Advanced Burn Life Support course as a prerequisite. In preparation for the course, participants will be emailed essential course materials.
Point of Care Ultrasound (PoCUS)
Tuesday, May 16 at 7:30 AM – 5:00 PM
PoCUS is a useful diagnostic technique in the care of critically-ill patients. This all-day session is an entry-level course on bedside heart and lung ultrasonography and is designed for physicians, advanced practice critical care nurses, and physician-assistants.
ABLS Course
Tuesday, May 16 at 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
This live, hands-on course is designed to provide the “how-to” of emergency care of the burn patient through the first 24-hour critical time period. Following a series of lectures, case studies are presented for group discussion. Testing consists of a written exam and a practical assessment.
Science of Wound Closure
Tuesday, May 16 at 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM
The Science of Wound Closure Course will review techniques and dressings to achieve definitive wound closure. Participants will use meshed textiles to cover wounds and learn from faculty in small groups. Participants will also practice applying different dressings and develop strategies that promote value in wound care. Participants are strongly encouraged to have completed Advanced Burn Life Support as a prerequisite for this course.
Rehabilitation Workshop
Tuesday, May 16 at 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM
This course will present lectures and laboratory educational sessions addressing core burn therapist competencies as identified by the ABA Burn Therapist Competency Tool (Parry et al., 2017). Didactic sessions will address evaluation components, treatment skills and evidence-based practice. Breakout segments will relate to the didactic portions and provide participants with hands-on experience with skills identified as necessary to the practice of burn therapy. At the completion of this course, participants will have an improved understanding and skill set in key burn therapy practice domains.
