What Does a Burn Survivor Outreach and Prevention Coordinator Do?

They create and deliver prevention programs, lead community education efforts, collaborate with burn teams and local partners, and provide resources and support to survivors and families.

Typical Work Environments

  • Hospital burn centers (often verified by the ABA) and trauma programs 

  • Public health departments and local agencies 

  • Schools and community organizations 

  • Nonprofit burn foundations and survivor networks

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate burn prevention and education programs 

  • Organize outreach to schools, workplaces, and at-risk groups 

  • Partner with fire departments, healthcare teams, and community organizations 

  • Maintain burn data registries and contribute to ABA verification efforts 

  • Support burn survivors and families with education and resources 

  • Lead or support process improvement projects to enhance patient care

  • Identifies opportunities for advocacy

  • Use evidence to develop prevention messaging to achieve behavior change

Education and Training Path

  • High school diploma or GED required; bachelor’s degree in public health, nursing, or a related field preferred 

  • 1+ year of experience in EMS, ED, ICU, or community outreach 

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification 

  • Advanced certifications may include ABLS, ACLS, or PALS 

  • Ongoing professional development in burn prevention, health education, and advocacy
