What Does a Burn Survivor Reintegration Specialist Do?

They guide burn survivors through recovery by leading peer support groups, providing counseling on returning to work, and helping survivors rebuild social skills, confidence, and community connections.

Typical Work Environments

  • Hospital burn centers (often verified by the ABA) and rehabilitation units 

  • Outpatient clinics specializing in burn aftercare 

  • Community-based nonprofit organizations and survivor networks 

  • Academic medical centers with burn recovery programs

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead group therapy and peer support sessions to reduce stigma and isolation 

  • Provide counseling on vocational skills and career reintegration 

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary burn teams: therapists, nurses, surgeons, and social workers 

  • Educate survivors and families about coping strategies and workplace accommodations 

  • Develop individualized reintegration plans focused on social and career goals 

  • Advocate for survivors’ access to community resources and continued education

Education and Training Path

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Therapeutic Recreation, Rehabilitation Counseling, Psychology, or related field 

  • Professional certifications as applicable (e.g., Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Certified Rehabilitation Counselor, CTRS) 

  • At least 2 years of professional experience in psychosocial rehabilitation or burn aftercare 

  • Ongoing professional development in trauma-informed care and group facilitation
